I received products, services or tickets to an event mentioned in this post free of charge in return for an honest review. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I would use personally and any opinions expressed are my own.
Ok, I know it’s the beginning of October and we usually talk back to school in September but actually one of my top tips for managing back to school expense with a bigger family is not doing everything all at once. I would probably list tardiness as one of my vices too but this time I’m not apologising for it!
Generally, September sees the children going back to school with new shoes and a few bits of uniform that had completely disintegrated during the summer term – usually the whites like shirts and undies. My main uniform re-stocks take place in October half-term when the summer uniforms are replaced with winter and then the reverse at Easter.
Other accessories like school bags, lunch boxes and stationery, in particular, I try to keep a small stock of spares on hand so they can be replaced as required. I find this way to be more cost efficient than buying four of anything in one go and necessary really because my children aren’t considerate enough not to break a water bottle half way through the term, or run out of glue.
Smiggle is a big favourite and I tend to have a small stock of their goodies in the back of the cupboard at all times for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is that it takes such strong willpower to walk past the shop without a quick browse – the children literally squeal each time they see one. They make the best gifts for all the school friend parties they get invited to. Are great treats for those rainy days, off sick days or any other times they seem intent to drive me a little crazy and need distracting.
I find Smiggle’s range of bags, lunchboxes and pencil cases to be incredibly high quality and on one occasion where we had a problem with a zip, they exchanged it without hesitation. They’ve checked that all the little details are correct and this means bottles and lunch bags are BPA free and easy to clean. Lunchbags keep lunch cool with food safe lining and additional compartments so you can keep items separate where necessary. I especially love the huge name label on lunch and school bags and am sure the teachers do too!
The current range of backpacks includes the ‘Now You See Me’ collection which has a large bucket style main opening making items easily accessible. It also has an adjustable chest strap so is perfect for children who have to carry a little more kit around. The ‘Stylin’ backpack range is bright and colourful and comes with a media pocket with headphone access so should keep those devices safe and sound. Both styles have padded shoulder straps, a laptop compartment with protective lining, dual bottle sleeves on the side and that brilliantly big-name label.
My only complaint about Smiggle would be how gender-specific their patterns and prints are and although I absolutely love the patterns in the ‘Now You See Me’ collection, I’d love to see a few more that are unisex. For this reason, I was particularly impressed to see their basic back to school collection included a very fun print that both boys and girls could enjoy. Also, this set with red, black and blue pens, pencil, dual-ended highlighter, and correction tape is so useful and fulfils a large part of the writing requirements for an older child’s back to school kit.
So if some of your child’s school kit needs refreshing for the winter term Smiggle is a great place to look for a really fun and bright selection that will bring colour to those grey morning school runs. It’s also the perfect place to go to buy a gift for any child when you’re not sure what to get – the range is so popular you really can’t go wrong!
I have a lovely selection of Smiggle goodies to brighten one readers back to school run which includes;
- One Stylin Backpack in blue
- One Stylin’ Double Decker Lunchbox in blue
